Robin Lent, a member of the Board of Texas Homeowners for HOA Reform, Inc. sent ripples through the Community Associations Institute (CAI) when she revealed the cover of their May-June issue during her testimony before the Texas Senate Intergovernmental Relations Committee hearing on the proposed TUPCA (Texas Uniform Planned Community Act) legislation. The CAI, a major supporter of TUPCA, claims to represent millions of Texas homeowners. Robin used CAI's own publication, Common Ground, to show the Senators how CAI truly feels about homeowner advocates. The CAI has told Texas legislators for years that they are the industry experts and that the legislation they have proposed and supported in the past is what homeowners want. Senators were visibly shocked when Robin gave them a copy of the cover which depicts homeowner advocates as crazed people spewing garbage, hot air and toxic waste. Below is that cover page. |

Frank Rathbun, CAI's VP of Communications and Public Relations, responded to homeowner advocates demanding an explanation saying, "The cover was a bit outlandish -- deliberately so. [It's] a graphic illustration designed to attract attention, to pique people's interest in a topic." It certainly attracted the attention of the Texas Senate IGR Committee! |
